Honest answers to the questions we hear most β no jargon, no upsell, just straight talk from a family that's been in the HVAC business since 1967.
Give us a call at (209) 598-8889 β we're happy to answer anything, even if you're not ready to schedule yet. That's just how we do things.
We recommend twice a year β once in the spring before cooling season and once in the fall before heating season. Regular tune-ups extend system life, improve efficiency, and catch small problems before they become expensive breakdowns. Think of it like an oil change for your car.
Most standard 1-inch filters should be replaced every 1β3 months. Thicker media filters (4β5 inch) can last 6β12 months. The honest rule: check your filter monthly. If it looks gray and dirty, replace it. A dirty filter is the #1 cause of HVAC problems we see β and it's 100% preventable.
Our pre-summer tune-up includes inspecting and cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, testing capacitors and contactors, lubricating moving parts, checking electrical connections, testing thermostat calibration, clearing the condensate drain, and inspecting the blower. Our pre-winter tune-up focuses on the heat exchanger, burners, ignition, gas connections, flue and venting, safety controls, and heating components. See our full Maintenance Plans page for complete checklists.
Common causes include a dirty air filter (check this first β it's free), low refrigerant due to a leak, a frozen evaporator coil, a faulty capacitor, or a dirty condenser coil. Some you can check yourself, but most require a professional diagnosis. Call us at (209) 598-8889 and we'll find the real problem β not invent a new one.
If your AC is running constantly but can't keep up, common culprits are low refrigerant, a dirty filter or coil, duct leaks losing conditioned air, or a system that's undersized for your home. In extreme heat, even a well-functioning system may struggle β but if it's happening on a normal day, call us for a diagnosis.
High summer energy bills are often caused by a system working harder than it should due to low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or duct leaks. Poor attic insulation and an older, inefficient system can also be major factors. A tune-up and duct inspection can often make a real difference β and we'll tell you honestly if a replacement would save you money.
A well-maintained central air conditioner typically lasts 15β20 years. If yours is over 15 years old and needs a significant repair, we'll give you an honest assessment of whether repair or replacement is the smarter financial decision β and we won't push you toward a new system if repair makes more sense.
If your furnace is blowing cold air, common causes include a tripped limit switch, a dirty filter restricting airflow, an ignition or pilot failure, or a thermostat issue. A heat pump blowing cold air in very low temperatures may be in defrost mode β that's normal β but if it persists, have it checked.
A gas furnace can last 20β30 years with proper maintenance. If you're having frequent repairs on an older furnace, the money might be better spent on a new, more efficient system. We'll walk you through the math honestly β no pressure.
A heat pump handles both heating and cooling in one system β it moves heat rather than generating it, which makes it very energy-efficient. They're an excellent choice for California's climate, especially if you're replacing an older system. We install and service all types of heat pumps and can give you a straight comparison against a traditional system for your home.
